Turning Social Media Off
Every few months I go through a face where I turn the social media off.
Not necessarily deleting my accounts, just uninstalling the apps from my phone and tablet.
Why?, asked no-one
Well, I'm glad you asked (still,no-one). I turn it off to make better choices, I turn it off to offer myself some clarity and peace of mind.
But mostly, I turn it off because it affects my depression.
I have been struggling with depression practically my whole life, ever since I remember myself.
When I turned 30, I started addressing this issue, hands on, fully aware of the ups and downs of it, trying to take control over my own mind. First I was on antidepressants, but due to a complication I had to stop them abruptly, which of course led me to gain a lot of weight, but that's a whole other chapter (I'll probably write about it). Since modern medicine didn't do me any good, I started going to
I'm not sure why, in 2024 (almost 2025) this issue is still a taboo, at least here in Greece. Taking care of your mental health is taking care of your health, PERIOD!
'uh, youz people are too fragile' 'we didn't go to therapy and we're just fine' 'why are you so sensitive?'
I mean, uncle... FUCK OFF!!
Yes, I'm sensitive and fragile, but more like a bomb, and the thing that gets to me the most is that people like you get to make it worse. If all you do is bring this persona on the table, well, I'd rather spend the holidays alone.
Which, you know, I do... and I fall on the trap of spending WAAAAY more time of social media, inevitably, I get to see how happy everyone is and what a lovely family they have and see, another schoolmate having a child, or getting married, or going on vacation...
You know, when someone's happiness, whether it's genuine or fake, makes you feel like shit, you don't get to punish yourself by exposing you to it. Do the thing, delete the app, turn it off, protect yourself.
Happiness is only real when shared, ok, I agree. But I ain't gonna pretend I feel happy when I'm not. I owe it to myshelf to be real, and feel my feelings, even if I'm The Grinch, or the bitter old lady, I'm still me, you know. And I need to keep it real for myself!
So, until it feels good to see it, and doesn't affect me at any level, this year, for Christmas, I do myself a favor and I pull the plug! I've done it is the past and I'll do it again, as long as it feels right.
Unplugged, unexposed, from the comfort of my home, I get to enjoy my days with my dog and my cat, and look at that! I finally have the time to Blog, too. Who knows? maybe I'll even clean the bathroom today...
Keep you posted
K
